Excursion 1: Reading Terminal Market (will also repeat from 3:30-5:30pm)
When: Thursday, June 23, 1-3pm ET
Description: This tour is for anyone interested in entrepreneurial resilience during a crisis, Philadelphia history, and/or great food! The Reading Terminal Market (RTM) is one of America’s largest and oldest public markets, housed since 1893 in a National Historic Landmark building.  RTM offers an incredible selection of locally grown & exotic produce, locally sourced meats and poultry, plus the finest seafood, cheeses, baked goods, and confections. Built next to the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad Company’s elevated terminal, this street-level market reverberated with the sounds of overhead trains until the railroad closed in 1976. Inbound and outbound commuters, as well as city residents from many neighborhoods got food items and meals from as many as 250 vendors and 100 farmers packed into the grid layout. Cycles of prosperity and hard times repeated throughout the 20th century, with a significant renewal effort in the 1990s tied to construction of the nearby Philadelphia Convention Center. COVID posed another challenge to the market’s vitality as in-person shopping shrunk to nearly nothing. The market pivoted quickly to online ordering and delivery, among other innovations that kept it open throughout the pandemic. Now its more than 80 merchants have reestablished the gastronomic bazaar that its original planners envisioned; in fact, RTM was just voted “Best Public Market in America” by USA Today. We’ll meet with RTM’s General Manager and the Chair of its active Volunteer Committee. You can plan to eat lunch ahead of our start at 1pm or stay for souvenir shopping after we conclude at 3pm.

Excursion 2: The New Pavilion at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP)
When: Thursday, June 23, 3:30-5:30pm ET
Location: Meet at conference hotel for short walk to Pavilion (escorted) or meet in lobby of Pavilion (1 Convention Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19104)
Description: This tour is for anyone interested in innovating and implementing new spaces and workflows, not just in health care. Opened in November 2021, the new Pavilion is one of the largest and most technologically advanced hospitals in the United States. The $1.6-billion facility consists of 17 floors and 504 patient rooms and was designed with the future in mind. Come tour the hospital then discuss the innovations with hospital leaders. We suspect that the lessons in design, implementation, workforce and operations management and other topics, apply across many industry contexts. The multilayered design process used behavioral research to guide design choices at each step, including input from thousands of employees through a series of life-size mockups of clinical spaces and simulations that the design team used to test design assumptions and generate feedback. You can watch a 1-minute video (, an overview of the pavilion design process and features ( and/or a Drone Tour (
