Innovation and Entrepreneurship in New Space Industries
The space sector is currently undergoing a paradigmatic shift. What used to be the exclusive domain of two superpowers twenty years ago is now being democratized and made accessible to established organizations and entrepreneurs from both developed and emerging countries. This new space era is a vibrant environment for technological innovation and entrepreneurship translating science fiction into reality and creating a sustainable future for our planet. It is being shaped by major technological advances in launch vehicles, satellites, robotics, telecommunications and new business models around space tourism, space habitats, lunar and interplanetary exploration, and even management of space debris. However, like any era of major technological disruption, it is subject to significant uncertainty and change. How long would it take for the emerging space opportunities to achieve fruition and for the companies to build sustainable business models around new technological innovations remain open questions? This session would provide a holistic account of how technology, innovation and entrepreneurship is shaping the emerging space sector in terms of the global business opportunities and challenges, and the future implications for our society and our planet. The panelists are global experts on market and technology trends, business strategies, public policy and geopolitical considerations, and would provide participants with a rich account of the new space era both in terms of the industry context and also the research opportunities.

9:45-11:00am Plenary | Innovation and Competition: New Rules?
Debates about the relationship between innovation and competition are not new but have new urgency in the present moment. Prevailing notions that antitrust actions are only appropriate when corporate M&A would cause consumer prices to rise are challenged, evoking an earlier era when the concentration of power was, by itself, a reason for regulatory action. In parallel, debates continue about whether Big Tech should be viewed as the primary source of disruptive and growth-enhancing innovations or as a barrier to innovations from smaller new entrants, echoing two different phases of Schumpeter’s thinking. Finally, privacy is rising to the forefront of policy making, with new voices are challenging the idea that privacy regulation will “stifle innovation”. Important differences in tackling these issues are evident across the U.S., the EU, and China. These distinguished panelists will bring varied perspectives from the legal and regulatory arena, applied especially to the major platform businesses that affect our daily lives so heavily.

1:45-3:00pm Plenary | Biden Administration Strategic Industrial Policies and the Implications for Industry Studies
One month after President Biden was inaugurated, he ordered supply chain assessments in multiple key traded sectors, initiating a broader approach to strategic industrial policies than the nation had seen in some time. In this plenary session, ISA board members David Hart and Andrew Reamer will facilitate a conversation about Biden Administration's approach to sectoral strategies--and its implications for industry studies--with two of its architects, long-time ISA members Elisabeth Reynolds, Special Assistant to the President for Manufacturing and Economic Development, and Susan Helper, Senior Economist at the Council of Economic Advisers.
